Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show public tastings

Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show public tastings

The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show is one of the most well-established and credible wine competitions on the wine show circuit. The public showcasing of the medal winners is an exclusive opportunity for you to taste high-quality wines which you would normally not have access to. For your convenience you can check out all the trophy winners and gold winners at Wine23.

With dozens of fabulous wines being exhibited at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, it’s going to be simply impossible to taste them all. To ensure you don’t miss out on some of the best, I’ve picked out 5 wines I  recommend you seek and sample. Remember, we have extensive tasting notes for most of the wines at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show on Wine23, so you can also add your own ratings and reviews, or add your favourites to a wishlist.

1. Saxenburg Private Collection Shiraz 2012

For lovers of quintessential South African Shiraz, you don’t have to look any further than the Saxenburg Private Collection Shiraz 2012 made by one of the true legends of the South African wine industry, Nico van der Merwe, who has been making benchmark and award-winning wines for 25 years.

2. Rustenberg Peter Barlow

Another classic you have to try is the Rustenberg Peter Barlow. It’s a truly beautiful Bordeaux blend made up predominately of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Rustenberg is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s first growths, and has an unmatched provenance of producing wine for over 100 consecutive vintages.

3. Vergelegen GVB 2011

The Vergelegen GVB 2011, a serious wooded blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, is in my opinion, one of the 10 finest white wines made in South Africa. It has an unparalleled track record of international and local awards and is made by Andre van Rensberg who has as much character as his sublime wines.

4. Iona Chardonnay 2014

For lovers of a cool climate Chardonnay, this special wine is made in a style closely resembling the classic wines of Burgundy. The Iona Chardonnay 2014 from Elgin is sure to delight even the most experienced palate.

5. Steenberg Semillon 2013

Last, but not least, the Steenberg Semillon 2013. JD Pretorius‘ deft hand with premium white varieties has crafted a wine which pairs beautifully with food – ultimately how wine should be best enjoyed! Although it just missed out on a gold medal, I urge you to put it on your to-do list. It’s really something unique.

The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2015 winning wines will be available for tasting at public tasting events to be held in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Wine lovers are invited to sample the 2015 winners of the trophy, gold and silver wine categories.
