Hooray, we can finally celebrate Spring! And what better way to do it than with a glass of bubbly at the Cellar Rats Wine Festival in Magaliesburg? This annual Spring Wine Festival, held at The Old Mill on the banks of the beautiful Magalies River, is toasting its 15th year. This year over 100 wine producers will be presenting more than 600 wines and products to you.

This is an outdoor event which is held on a large country estate in Magaliesberg, approximately 45 minutes drive from Johannesburg. Loads of rolling lawn and large trees, and a river to stroll along, make this an ideal setting. It’s a family festival, with supervised entertainment for children while the parents relax and enjoy the wines in the countryside. Food, refreshments and picnic baskets will be on sale.

So, what will you be toasting the great weather with? Wade Bales’ bubbly of choice for this fun day out is Villiera. Scout these wines out at the festival and give them a taste. Don’t forget to rate them on your free Wine23 app so you can remember which vintages tantalised your tastebuds in future.

Villiera Brut Natural 2010
Villein’s Jeff Grier  has been responsible for winemaking at Villiera — the family farm — since 1983, after several years of working at Distillers and later, Delheim. This fully-fragranced, dry Chardonnay Cap Classique bubbly has a rich, creamy yeasty aroma with a full, ripe toasty flavour on the palate. The 2009 vintage sold out, so snap this up if you can.

Villiera Traditional Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc 2014
If bubbly’s not your thing, this arresting Sauvignon Blanc is worth a try. The Traditional Bush Vine style of Sauvignon Blanc focuses on the greener spectrum of varietal character. The bunches hang in the shade and harvesting occurs early to ensure a refreshing style, displaying green pepper and fig with some smokiness. It is intensely flavoured with good structure and it has the ability to keep.

Villiera Inspiration 2010
Chenin Blanc is having a moment, with wine lovers embracing this easy-drinking white wine. This late harvest Chenin Blanc has a brilliant golden appearance. It is intensely fragrant with hints of honey, raisins, marmalade and nuts penetrating the aroma. On the palate it is rich and sweet, but with sufficient acid to balance and it lingers forever.
